Insecurity and Leadership

“Saul was very angry; this refrain displeased him greatly. ‘They have credited David with tens of thousands,’ he thought, ‘but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom?’ And from that time on Saul kept a close eye on David.” 1 Samuel 18:8–9

Saul’s leadership unraveled because of insecurity. Instead of celebrating David’s victories, Saul compared himself and feared losing control. Insecurity poisoned his relationships, clouded his judgment, and ultimately destroyed his legacy.

Leaders today face the same temptation. Insecurity makes us compete with those we should be developing, hold back affirmation when we should be generous, and grasp for power instead of trusting God.

The good news is that Christ offers freedom from insecurity. When we rest in being beloved, we no longer need to compare ourselves. We can celebrate others and lead with open hands.

Application

  • Where does insecurity show up in my leadership?

  • Who am I tempted to compare myself with?

  • How can I practice celebrating others instead of competing?

Prayer: Lord, reveal the places where insecurity has taken root in me. Heal me from the need to compare myself to others. Teach me to celebrate their victories and trust you with my own path. Amen.
