Life Transitions, Job Transitions, and Career Changes

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NIV)

I used to believe that once I found my calling, I would stay on one steady course forever. No twists, no pivots—just a straight line from where I was to where I wanted to be.

But life doesn’t move in straight lines. It moves in seasons, that are a combination of short and long term assignments. The calling is weaved into the tapestry of these assignments, and that is not fixed.

There have been times when I felt God stirring my heart toward something new while I was still comfortable where I was. Other times, I was pushed into transition through circumstances I never asked for—job changes, ministry shifts, personal challenges. Each time, it felt unsettling. It was easy to wonder: Did I miss something? Am I failing?

Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us that change isn’t failure—it’s the natural rhythm God built into life. Seasons come and go by his design. Some seasons are for planting, others for harvesting. Some are for building, others for tearing down and beginning again.

If you’re in a transition right now, take heart. You’re not lost—you’re just moving with the season God has appointed for you. Even when you can't see the full picture, trust that God is shaping you for what’s next. No experience is wasted. Every job, every shift, every change is part of the preparation for the current or next assignment.

The goal isn't to cling to one season forever—it’s to be faithful in every season God leads you through.

Reflection Questions:

  • What season do you feel like you're currently in?

  • How has God used past transitions to shape you for what’s next?

  • What fears do you need to surrender as you move into a new season?

Lord, you are the God of every season. When life changes around me, help me to trust that you remain the same. Teach me to embrace each new beginning with faith, knowing you are leading me. Shape me through every transition and prepare me for what’s ahead. Amen.
